デナリ国立公園のシンボル、マッキンリー山（地元名デナリ山）。海抜標高ではエベレストなどに譲るものの、ふもとから一気に立ち上がっている標高差では世界有数だそうです。上昇気流のせいか、雲がかかっていることも多く、１週間近く滞在したうちで、頂上がおがめたのは１〜２日だけでした。私はどうしても頂上が見たかったので、軽飛行機による遊覧飛行にも参加しました。眺めはさすがに良かったのですが、飛行場は砂利敷で結構怖かったです。
Mt. McKinley (local name: Mt. Denali) is the indisputable symbol of Denali NP. Although it falls short of Mt. Everst etc. in the hight from the sea level, it is one of the tallest mountains in the world measured from the mountain's own outskirt. Mt. McKinley is often covered with cloud perhaps due to upward air stream. During my stay of about a week I could see the peak only in a day or two. As I was determined to have a good look of the peak, I even tried a sightseeing flight by a light plane. The view from the plane was superb! But I was scared of the runway which was not paved but graveled.
